Over the past few months, a large number of people started noticing their iPhones slowing down. Many of the iPhones were not delivering performances as advertised by Apple and soon the discussions on these concerns gained a large momentum. Soon, performance analysis apps like Geekbench collected data from several phones and found that this “syndrome” was common with older phones. With an increase in the number of issues reported, people began accusing Apple of rendering software updates that inherently slowed their system down. Finally, Apple broke its silence on the matter and confessed or rather explained.
Apple confessed that it has been deliberately slowing the older iPhones down, but with the best intentions at heart. They also apologized to users for doing the same without their prior consent and affirmed that it was not done with an intent to shorten the life span of any device.
Well, the answer revolves around your battery. Most smartphones including iPhones employ lithium-ion batteries for powering up your device. As time passes, these batteries deteriorate and are incapable of supplying high amount of power to the processor to function at full-speed and/or other high performance modes. As put by Apple, when the batteries get worn out, they cannot meet “peak current demands”. In turn, Apple slows down the processor such that it draws less power and there is no “pressure” on the battery. The battery can now satisfy all of the low-performance processors demand. Apple took this decision when they found that several older models of the iPhone shut down at peak performance usage since the battery’s voltage couldn’t keep up. Apple reveals that they had to prioritize phone’s overall functionality over processor intensive tasks. Apple confirms that it has slowed down several iPhone models such as iPhone 7, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6 and iPhone SE.
To gain back customer loyalty, Apple has announced a $50 reduction in battery replacement and has also promised to roll out a new update that will "give users more visibility into the health of their iPhone's battery."
Apple’s “stealthy” update aggravated many of their customers. Lawsuits have been filed globally against Apple for "unfair business practices" and "breach of implied contract." Apple’s lack of communication was also severely criticized by many customers.
